When you are looking for a paint to use in your house you need to make sure you use all the materials at your disposal to research your paint choice. You can use several sources to do this research. What is most important is that your source is reliable. Wikipedia is not a reliable source, nor anywhere that is based on gossip and hearsay. You also cannot rely on any reviews on a site sponsored by a paint supply company. They have a vested interest in what you buy. that is why they will do anything to convince you that their paint is the best paint in the world.
The first place I would suggest going to look for information and customer reviews is websites designed for this purpose. There are several free websites like this out there on the internet. On such sites people go to either register their dissatisfaction with a certain paint or to express their approval and recommendation of a kind of paint. It is important to remember when looking at these sites that people working for the paint company can come through and post positive reviews. When a review sounds a little too thought out and like it is trying to sell you on the product, it is a good bet that it is not from a consumer.
Most reviews will be negative however, and you need to take this with a grain of salt. Remember that people are quicker to complain about lack of quality than to talk about how well things went. Most people when done with a successful project sit back and relax. They don’t go out and promote that product. A good rule is that a good review is worth two or three bad reviews. Also sometimes people complain about things that aren’t really the fault of the paint. You want to make sure the paint does everything it says on the package. If it does all that it was supposed to do then you can’t complain. It would be considerate no matter how the project goes that you leave a review.
A secondary source of information would be consumer advocates and watchdog groups. Organizations like consumer reports have a large impartial staff who have the job of learning about products and reviewing them. They are paid to be unbiased so you don’t have to worry about getting bad information. Unfortunately sometimes you have to buy a subscription to get access to this information. But that could be well worth it if you get guided to the best paint for your project and you are pleased with the outcome because you took the time to do your research and read some reviews before starting.
